In Ellicott City, Maryland, located less than thirty minutes from Fort Meade, Maryland, is an annual hot air balloon festival. The Preakness Celebration Balloon Festival takes place every May and is a lot of fun for the whole family. People can see and learn about hot air balloons and even take ride up in one of these balloons. Many vendors will be onsite selling food, crafts, and several other items. As the sun sets, the lights are turned on inside the balloons for an amazing sight.

The Calvert County Fair is held each fall in Odenton, Maryland. Odenton is just a few miles from Fort Meade. This fair was first held in 1886, making it one of the oldest county fairs in Maryland. Although the Calvert County Fair has changed a great deal over the years, it still remains a favorite family event to residents of the surrounding areas. The fair is filled with exhibits, good food, rides, games, and livestock. There is also entertainment throughout each day of the fair.

Annapolis, Maryland, which is about twenty miles from Fort Meade, is home to an annual Renaissance Festival that takes place each summer. Here, festival goers can experience what life was like in Renaissance times. There are plenty of costumed entertainers to watch as people wander around the fair. People will find many booths to stop at for food and drink. There are also many merchants selling replicas of Renaissance period items. 

The Annual Inner Harbor Art Festival started four years ago in Baltimore, Maryland, located about twenty miles from Fort Meade. During this summer festival, visitors can stroll about the famous inner harbor area as they peruse the booths featuring several types of art. Some of the art featured at this festival is photography, painting, and jewelry. People will also be able to meet and converse with the creators of the displayed art.

Baltimore is also home to the Baltimore Book Festival, a fun literary event that takes place each fall. The festival features several authors and book signings, as well as book sales. There is also live music to enjoy as patrons wander around seeing all that the festival has to offer. People can listen to story telling, poetry readings and see demonstrations throughout the festival area. This family-friendly event includes a project just for kids. Book-lovers of all ages will find this festival an enjoyable experience.
